Updates and Releases
Updates
I have recently updates a handful of pages on this site, sporting pictures and cataloguing and tagging and adding information where it needs to be done. If anyone has additional information, for either clarity's sake or can contribute more than what is there to help distinguish the DVD as unique, feel free to contact me at ant@rareoopdvds.com with the subject heading DVD Info Update.
Aside from that, there are some cool new DVD's out that I would like to share. Some for collectible reasons, others because they are just cool.
New Releases
One of the hot new releases coming out that has been discussed in the forum is the 50 Years of Janus Films Boxed Set. Some of the drawbacks is the case that the DVD's sit in, sleeves rather than cases. The other being is that a handful are in the Criterion Collection without the bonus disc. Even Pandora's Box, the classic Louise Brooks/G. W. Pabst film is set for release later this year by Criterion. The book as well, someone mentioned, is full of liner notes already in the Criterion Collection. Despite these setbacks, one will have a hard time overlooking this set and will definately want it! It is very pretty and tempting. It does have a heavy price tag - $650.00. They do throw in a few T-shirts and you are entered into a drawing for 25 Criterion DVDs. All this before the October release date.
Another really cool set from NoShame Films, the same company that brought you the The Emilio Miraglia Killer Queen Box SetBoxed set comes Dark Waters Boxed Set from Italian director Mariano Baino. This 2-disc set is Limited in number to only 3,000 sets. Included in this set is a stone amulet replica from the movie.
While this DVD has been out for over a month, I am writing about it here because for a while it had such a strong VHS market. That film is the psychological thriller Sybil. On VHS was released only the 132 minute version. Even then a copy was selling as low as $15.00 and as high as $50.00. Yet, while this movie was a television movie, it was always in demand for the OOP VHS. What is was even more in demand was the rarely seen 187-minute version. The VHS copy would at times serve up to a few hundred dollars on eBay, assuming it was not a bootleg version. But now, all that is awash and Warner Bros. has released the 187-minute version on a 2-disc set. The first disc is the movie, while the second disc are special features. Accordingly, it is based on a true story of split personality (some 13 personalities) and its therapy. Sally Field as Symbil won an Emmy Award for her performance.
Lastly, for you shock horror fans, comes a new release from Subversive Cinema a 3-DVD boxed set, Savage Sinema from Down Under. This set features the hard to watch cinema of Mark Savage who is considered a cross between Larry Clark (Kids, Ken Park) and Herschell Gordon Lewis (The Gore Gore Girls, The Gruesome Twosome). This set also features a CD soundtrack as a fourth disc. The sticker affixed on the front of the set warns that this set is extremely graphic in both violence and sexual situations.
