Well, the Star Wars Tin is now out and, even though most people are staunch against giving Mr. Lucas another dime, there are plenty of souls out there who are more than willing to fork over at least another 75 dollars for the Star Wars Trilogy - Limited Edition w/ Collectible Metal Case - Widescreen Version (Includes Original & Special Editions) [BOX SET]. The special tin was released exclusively at Best Buy, while lithographs were released exclusively at Circuit City. Both of these editions are sold out. Although this may be the case, check your local stores first. I believe there are still plenty out there. The Best Buy edition has a steep store cost which may have customers initially hesitant.
One of the trends I have noticed with new collectibles is their initial "race" to get them initially inflating the price, but one may quickly see that there are lots out there. The demand then wanes and the prices come down.
While some can linger in the light of the new release of Star Wars tin (because this is for a limited time only, and, perhaps, the last time it will ever be released on DVD), I decided to look to the future for my sustenance.
This was noted in the forum and definitely should be mentioned. A beautifully packaged and designed set of the classic sci-fi Forbidden Planet (Ultimate Collector's Edition). This is when Leslie Nielson was actually serious, even though his expressions for his comedies are the same. It is also the beginning of Robbie the Robots career. And for you literate bugs out there, this is a loose (very loose) adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest. But never mind that, look at the set! How cool is that! A Robbie Robot toy, some postcards, double-disc set all wrapped in a sweet looking tin. I don't know if this is a Limited Edition or not. It is from Warner Bros.
This set looks pretty decent as well, however, the reception was split: The Da Vinci Code (Special Edition Giftset). It is a 2-disc set and has these features:
# Includes collectible cryptex and Robert Langdon Journal
# First Day on the Set with Ron Howard Featurette: Director Ron Howard introduces the film and the excitement of beginning production at the Louvre in Paris
# Featurette on The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown
# Featurette: A Portrait of Langdon
# Featurette: Who is Sophie Neveu?
# Featurette: Unusual Suspects - The international castĶColorful, memorable and frightening characters
# Featurette: Magical Places
# Featurette: Close-up on Mona Lisa
# Featurette: The Filmmaking Experience Part 1 - Includes a DVD exclusive look at filming the last and revealing scene
# Featurette: The Filmmaking Experience Part 2
# Featurette: The Codes of "The Da Vinci Code"
# Featurette: The Music of "The Da Vinci Code"
# DVD ROM - "Da Vinci Code" Puzzle Game PC Demo
Let's see, in other news, a new version of Grease (Rockin' Rydell Edition) (haha, I originally wrote it here as "Greece") was released.
There are two versions available, one encased in a black -T-Birds leather jacket, and the other is a Pink Ladies satin jacket. So whichever kinship you felt more towards, you can now belong to the appropriate group. An interesting set that is coming out soon is Dust Devil - The Final Cut by Subversive Sinema. This company is gaining some notariety in their packaging and remastering. This set is a 5-disc set at a great price! Only 20 bucks! It comes with 2 versions of the film and then 3 documentaries by director Richard Stanley, in addition to a CD soundtrack. Comepletely cool set and the reviews are excellent! And of course, if you have that original The Little Mermaid (Limited Issue), you may want to consider selling it off. Not that you would get much for the original. The same fate proves with Disney pressings. While the old versions lose their interest in the collector market, the newer, more improved version, has more commodity than the older version. Nonetheless, a 2-disc special edition, like the previous Disney releases, of The Little Mermaid (Two-Disc Special Edition) is set to be released any day now. Maybe it will be as limited as Bambi (Disney Special Platinum Edition) and Bambi II (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).
For cool out of print and generally hard to find DVD's, check out my latest auction fest on eBay right here. Also some forum members like Allthings has a nice selection of rare video games to check out. Buzymatt has a collection of rare DVDs to check out. And it looks like Cult Collectible DVD (errolflynn12345 in our forum) store is open for biz. I also wanted to mention DVDCollector110 whom I think has a very nice display of items. Not alot of stuff, but seemingly choice items to look at.
So, while you are looking through your collection and wondering what might be missing, I can only say that the only cure for a complete collection is more Star Wars! You gotta have more Star Wars!
