Top 10 Favorite Movie/DVD sites

Besides our own great DVD site, we don't really publish too much in the way of news oriented information, but like everyone else I am hopping around form site to site and have my own list of regular sites I go to for much of that. OopAnt and I have compiled a list of our 10 favorite sites (5 his, 5 mine) into the top 10 movie and or dvd new sites. Take a look.

JoBlo

joblo
An amusing site which has grown over the last few years, Jo Blo (or blow) offers quick reads of current rumors, reviews of movies & dvds, interviews and many pics of hot girls. They have a huge fan base which is proven on their very active forum partly because of their underground, edgy feel to their site design and because they don't take themselves quite seriously. The only detractor of the whole site is the many, many many forms of advertising on the site which is getting insidious which in recent months have made my visits less frequent. Sorry, I love the site, but not being bombarded with ads.

Roger Ebert's Reviews

roger_ebert
I think Roger is not only a great reviewer but a great writer with incredible insight into movies. I love, love, love reading the movies he absolutely hates! His sarcasm drips off the screen. But his passion for movies is something beautiful, true and bigger than he is (did that come out right?). His reviews always gives me a new angle of the movie I hadn't thought of, which I love. Besides his review - you must read his Answer Man Q & A, which he responds to a few emails every other week, they let you in a little further into popular issues like the terrible movie theater experience that is going on as well as the 'record low' box office year. Recently, blogs by other writers have been posted on his page which are also great reads.

Box Office Prophets

boxoficeprophets
Dedicated to the billion dollar industry we know as the box office, these guys each week attempt to guess or calculate what movies will take in based on certain criteria like time of year, what else is being released. They are usually pretty damn close. Get some nice insight into the movie market with their in-depth columns and analysis, also read some entertaining articles like 'How to spend $20' or 'From the Basement'. Check it out, it's a great bookmark.

cinematical

A web blog and part of the Weblogs Inc network, Cinematical gives up movie musings all day long. Because it's a blog like Rare OOP, it's a long page to scroll through, but the articles are usually entertaining. This is probably the biggest movie based blog on the net right now, partly because of the network they are associated with and partly because they have quality news. I do like that I can skim thorugh a full days worth of postings in a short period of time since most posts aren't very long. Well worth looking at.

DVD Times

dvdtimes
The most up to date news site offering actual release dates of dvd's in the US & UK. They also get detailed information about the special features of discs and cover and menu art. While their DVD release news are the best portion of the site, they also review dvd's in both region 1 & 0 as well as theatrical releases. I love seeing what is coming up, like finally Nip/Tuck Season 3 is coming..in May. damn so far but so close.

Quicktime Trailers

quicktime
Hands down the best website for the latest movie trailers. Better than any written information is the film itself, and Apple has become the one site that, not only gives you top quality trailers, but also the latest and the best trailers around. Once in a while a promotional trailer will be available, however, I personally enjoy the trailers the best. I check this site out at least once a week as there is usually something new to see.

Xploited Cinema

xploited cinema
If you have read through my past blogs before, then you have heard of Xploited Cinema. I love this place. It is basically run and owned by Tony Simonelli, an apparent lover of underground and European cinema. He has created a great site and has tons of support from various other underground cinemafiles that run amuck in our country, where, once in a while he lists various conventions he is going to be at. The site itself offers some of the strangest and curious films that you can find out there and is updated roughly once a week where new titles are added to the inventory. As mentioned recently in our forum about "making the region free plunge", this is a great place to have some of those needs met. In my personal experience, everything seems to be in stock when it states, and I get them in 3-4 days.

Kinoeye

This website offers some great information concerning European cinema that is intellilgent and can cover other areas of the world outside British and Italian cinema. As it states, "This view reduces cinema history to films, directors, actors, and movements that have achieved a universal prominence in the history books and whose names are known around the globe." A small site that looks at large issues with a fresh eye. This site does review DVD's that pertain to certain directors or cultures in their focus of that article.

Criterion Collection

criterion
I don't think any top ten is complete withou the Official Criterion Website. While the site itself offers little in the way of new information, yet, when it does update, it is usually important to read. The lists of the DVD's and it sublists, such as the out of print list, are always good references. I particularly like the Coming Soon lists which is the one I look at the most. Its always fun and interesting to see what new films Criterion will be releasing next.

Facets Multimedia

facets
While not the best organized site out there, it certainly has tons of information of films past, present and foreign. Not only dealing with DVD's and videos, but also their theatrical releases as well as various award presentations. There is even a film school! This site works as a great reference for the more obscure tates (like mine), and be able to spot some interesting films you are either unaware of, or that you may have had difficulty finding out from other sites.
