Best Selling Titles
So I put the Top selling OOP DVDs on Amazon a little quickly for a few reasons. When I was working on it, the power went out so I lost the data I was working on. Thats frustrating considering the time and research that goes into this. Also, tomorrow I am going on vacation and I have other things I need to do today.
For those that missed the previous lists, the rules for the list are: Amazon must not have it as available, or any TOOS or expectations of shipping time. In addition, no user made pages, no aisan versions (no matter if they are R1 or R0), no collections (such as Friends Seasons 1-10), and no side-by-sides, back-to-backs, or multipacks in any form. Boxed sets are acceptable, such as Farscape Season 1. Also, for congruency's sake, MMM has to have it announced as discontinued. It is ok if other stores outside Amazon has it for sale (i.e. dvdempire, dvdplanet, etc.).
CAVEAT: These numbers fluctuate every hour or so and this is only to be considered as a snapshot of Amazon at the particular time of this writing. Even as I write this, some variations are likely to occur, so by the time it gets published, you will see some changes in numbers and perhaps even place standings as I have them listed. It is also likely to stand that numbers that seemingly jumped up might be indicative of a recent sale, rather than a constant. If overall website sales on Amazon are slower than other periods of the year, then it is also likely that a sale would increase the rank double or more.
Amazon's Best Selling OOP List
NOTES: I have included 5 more in the list bringing the total to the top 26 OOP DVDs. Some I have introduced are the classics like MST Vol. 10, Mahabharata and Farscape Season 1. Some of the top Disney sellers have changed places, like Bambi moved above Snow White, while Little Mermaid 2 continues to drop. Bronx Tale moves up as does Nightmare Before Christmas. America: Freedom to Facism comes back into the top 11 knocking out Little Mermaid. Jason Bourne and My Favorite Year slid up slightly, while Masque of Red Death, Farscape Season 1: Premiere/I E.T. and Danielle Steel's Zoya slide heavily in the ranks.
#26) The classic OOP title Mystery Science Theater Collection #10 remains a popular item, although has somewhat fallen from grace as Rhino issued its 10.2 set. However, this set still contains the Godzilla feature which remains unavailable and only through this set. Current rank is 28,185. Average price is $141.60.
#25) In this list we also see Danielle Steel making her debut with Zoya Part 1 & 2. Released from Anchor Bay with about 12 different titles under the Danielle Steel banner, most of which are out of print with varying popularity. This title begins with a sales rank of #27,947 down from #7,987. Average price is $12.50.
#24) Slipping to the #20 slot is the Masque of Red Death/The Premature Burial double feature from MGM's Midnite Movies. For a short time Amazon had this title for sale directly, which seems to affected some of the pricing from third party sellers. Current rank is #26,691 down from #18,903. Average price is $11.85 down from $13.97.
#23) Love Me If You Dare, the French film starring Academy Award Winner Marion Cotillard. Recently discontinued from Paramount Pictures remains a favorite. Current rank is #21,096. Average price is $42.48.
#22) Peter Brook's Mahabharata is alive and well despite its asking price. Quite rare and very desireable for its well depicted version of the sacred texts of India. Beware of "Greek" imports. Current rank is 21,016. Average price is $154.52.
#21) Farscape has been a continual best seller and remains in high demand. Although some of the more lofty sets are great sellers, the lower priced titles are currently better movers. Farscape Season 1, Vol. 1 - Premiere/I, E.T. is currently ranked at #19,446 down from #8,192. Average price $11.00.
#20) Ready to Wear, Robert Altman's film on the fashion industry is popular despite mixed reviews. Current rank is #15,742. Average price is $8.00.
#19) Slipping again is Long Way Round. Still a good mover, however, drops out of the top 10 into the number 16 slot. Current rank is #10,863 upfrom #16,774. Average price is $43.00.
#18) Little Mermaid 2. Despite increase in rank, prices remain close to what it was last time. Still continued to be a hot seller is keeps itself in the top 10. Current rank is #6,524 down from #2,511. Average price is $19.00.
#17) Joseph Campbell's The Power of Myth which is a particular favorite among schools, libraries, and intellectuals alike. The groundbreaking series, when originally aired on television back in 1984 became an instant classic and a standout as one of the most revolutionary minds in the latter part of the 20th century. It's current rank is #6,372 up from #12,756. Average price is $90.00.
#16) The original Soylent Green has been a popular sci-fi cult film for years. The death of Charlton Heston has spiked all of the Heston titles. This version of Soylent Green is a great piece to have in original snap case, however, the newer edition is keeping it prices at bay.Current rank is #6,169 up from #6,318. Average price is $24.00.
#15) The Jason Bourne Collection which has been a hot seller since its release last Christmas. A quick sell out made sales easy for third party sellers despite the number of copies available. It is slowly drying up in number of copies. Be leary of eBay as there are bootleg/asian versions of this set using stock photos. Current rank is #5,079 down from 4,153. Average price is $86.00.
#14) Alfred Hitchcock's classic North By Northwest gets discontinued shortly after the announcement from Warner Brothers. Always a great addition to any collection, this DVD is in the keep case and has a number of bonus features which keeps it a popular item. Current rank is #5,965. Average price is $13.00.
#13) Peter O'Toole's My Favorite Year enters the list. A release from Warner Brothers Home Video. The current sales rank is #4,468 up from #7,002. Average price $5.00.
#12) Beautiful Girls moves out of the top 10, despite its rise in sales. This great comedy remains a favorite among collectors and movie fans justifying its popularity. Current rank is #4,018 up from #4,198. Average price is $15.00.
#11) America: Freedom to Facist remains in the top 20. One of the more obscure titles released from Cinema Epoch, but continues to show a strong sales rank. It should be noted that this item was not released in a keep case, but released in a paper sleeve. Current rank is #4,860 down from #3,085. Average price $5.99.
#10) Pinocchio, one of Disney's classic films continues to be one of the top sellers in the list. Although prices are stable in the high 20's, the number of copies continue to get scarce. It has been discontinued for some time now, so there is some due anticipation for a re-release. This edition was released both in "Gold" and "Limited Edition" banners, both with same UPC and content, just different package art. Current rank is #2,733 down from #1,834. Average price is $25.00.
#9) The recent sale on a number of brand new copies of Farscape - The Complete Season 1 has catapulted this set to the top ten. Current rank is #2,394. Average price is $208.25.
#8) The Nightmare Before Christmas. Even in the summer, this popular, and now somewhat cultish film, continues to be a fan favorite with its darkly humorous take on the Christmas lore. Although it has a very good sales rank, pricing is on a seasonal basis and, unless a re-release is announced, expect these prices to go back up during the Halloween and Christmas seasons. Current rank is #1,383 up from #2,136. Average priceAverage price is $16.00.
#7) The Beatles Yellow Submarine
continues to sale the stormy seas and is one of the better titles to
own in this list. There are still too many copies to keep it from
getting to far out, even for used copies, however, new copies are
getting scarcer and scarcer, so you might see a wider gap between the
two.Current rank is #1,766 down from #1,563. Average price is $32.00.
#6) A Bronx Tale.
Although released in a boxed set (also OOP), this version is still a
great seller, but at minimal prices and quantity keeps it from becoming
too rare. Current rank is #1,327 up from #1,644.
#5)Snow White has slipped to #4 from the 3 slot this time around. Right now the price seems just about right. There are plenty of
copies to keep the title from getting too expensive.Current rank is #1,144 down from #1,018. Average price is $44.00.
#4) Bambi, again, one of my personal favorites, is discontinued and this probably wont get released for some time. With nearly 100 copies currently being offered, one has the luxury of waiting as if it were still in print. Current rank is #1,034 down from #411. Average price is $16.00.
#3) Moving up one spot on the list is Lady and the Tramp.
Again, Disney monopolizes the top slots in the list. This is its second
release under the Platinum line which is a 2-disc set, while the
original release was a single, bare bones disc that was under the Limited Edition banner. Current rank is #596 up from #861. Average price is $23.00.
#2) Beauty and the Beast. Certainly a good addition to anyone's OOP collection for both buyer and seller. Currently there are 51 copies with prices starting at 24.99 for a used and new at 40. These are equally hot on eBay, however, it is difficult to get too much more than that due to the number of copies that circulate. Current rank is #380 down from #302. Average price is $40.00.
#1) The reigning top seller this week, once again belongs to a Disney title, that one being The Lion King. I had originally considered this title for the previous list, but there was a Gift Pack that was offered, so I had to rescind the option. This time around, I am including it despite the set, and allow this to now be the number 1 seller, shifting everything one slot up. Current rank is #217, up from #253. Average price is $28.00.
The prices noted here are determined by 2 recent completed sales on eBay (preferable new and used if possible) and the lower new and used on Amazon and an average of 4 total. The Disney titles are HEAVILY bootlegged by both foreign and US sellers that it really becomes difficult to make distinctions on some of them. However, I used only titles that I was certain were authentic versions as price coordinates so that the average was more accurate to officially licensed material.
