November 2007 OOP Update
Here is an update on some of the highlights of titles that have been discontinued. Most of these are as noted by MMM which are subject to change status and stock quantity from respective retailers without notification.
NOTES: Highlander is one of many releases from Artisan passed onto Anchor Bay. This edition is perhaps the best version to get, but still readily available at this time, also with another version still available. The two Giallo films from Anchor Bay are both set for re-release next year from Blue Underground. Vamp has potential with no release forthcoming that I am able to observe. The Xena Season 2 set is already out of stock but at reasonable prices. I don't know what future these hold as they have a strong following. There is also Season 4 and 5 that is no longer available at this point. Seasons 1, 2 and 4 are reported as discontinued.
Matewan looks as though its been out of stock for a while now. Promised Land looks to be an early Meg Ryan film that is also out of stock. Another title of the same name noted as "Director's Cut" is a different film altogether.
The Baby Einstein from Buena Vista has been a popular series. Accordingly, this edition. Baby Newton, is the only single version available, however, available in a three-pack. The Disney Treasures Behind the Scenes are usually good fare. The releases of these have been getting confusing as more and more re-releases occur in varying packages. When the first and second waves were released, a score of "non-tin" versions also came out throwing a wrench in their collectiblility. Not to mention Spanish versions also being released (whether they were authentic or not has yet to be declared). While Disney always has a market, it has since been reduced to bootlegs, variances, forthcoming re-releases, etc. Stepfather 2 seems to be a popular title starring the now popular actor Terry O'Quinn (Locke from the TV show Lost).
The Simpsons Boxed sets from Season 9 and 10 are Limited Editions in package form, however, their standard releases will still be available. Last of the Mohicans has numerous releases, this version being Director's Expanded Edition. There has been some criticism in the reviews on Amazon about this particular version as the flow of the film is disrupted from the theatrical release.
Jacque Demy's Bay of Angels is no longer in stock. Chinese Roulette and Rio Das Mortes are two Fassbinder films which are great potentials. Dangerous Laisons is the 270-minute version while a 200-minute version is still available. Perrout Le Fou has been discontinued for some time, however, Criterion is set to release their version soon. Submarine Attack is the only version available, a film from 1954.
The Treasures of Cinema from Image Entertainment has been out of stock for some time. While there are other sets from the same series, those are still available.
Django Kill is still available, but this version was distributed by Image Entertainment under Blue Underground. Blue Underground currently is distributed by Alternative Cinema.
Jane Eyre is from 1944 starring Orson Welles. This particular version shows the "Cliff Notes" version, however, a standard release is still available.
Padre Pio is from NoShame Films. Many of these are slowly moving out of production or stock. It is still questionable whether NoShame is changing distributors or discontinuing US releases altogether. This title has been officially discontinued accordingly.
Pinky Violence Collection from Panik House is a Limited Edition set in pink puffy packaging with 5 movies. They are still readily available at this time, however, you may see it move in and out of stock. Judging from Sex and Fury, I would recommend this set, however, I would not anticipate immediate returns on the investment.
The Charlie Brown Classics look to be good finds. Although MMM notes two UPCs (one for checkpoint security), Amazon lists both under the same ASIN. Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas also is under 2 UPC's but Amazon lists as one. Also, there is a 50th Anniversary Deluxe Remastered Edition available in a keepcase (while the original is in a snapcase).
That Was Then...This Is Now from Paramount is available, and is listed with 2 UPC's, but Amazon with one ASIN. Titanic 3-Disc set will surely have another release at some point, but this remains the premiere version.
Marx Brothers Collection is surprising to see discontinued. It is the same set as the previous Image Entertainment release from long ago. If these move out of stock quickly, I would expect these to be a great pick up. In addition, there are the two Double Features: Go West/Big Store and Room Service/At the Circus, both minor Marx Brothers films. To Sir With Love is already out of stock. Guess Who's Coming to Dinner was originally set for a re-release this year, but has been post-poned for Feb of next year. Brother John is still available. Tootsie is also out of stock at this time. No set re-releases on any that I observed except the one noted.
Minnie and Moskowitz is out of stock. Bluebeard from Anchor Bay has been OOP for a while now. A re-release is set from Lions Gate next year. It seems to have been overlooked as the actors noted on Amazon are different than this Anchor Bay version.
Many of these titles are still available from these retailers. Purchases through these banners help support our site. Remember, if you purchase through DeepDiscount, the 20% Sale is still happening through November 26th. Just use the code DDAF before checkout in the appropriate sales code box.
