New Re-Releases and Recent Out of Print

There are lots of reasons a DVD goes out of print. The two most probable reasons are a rights dispute about the item, ownership, who gets how much money, and then there is the revamping or modifying the DVD into a better or cheaper version depending on the film. So while many of our favorites go out of print, some may have longer tunnels than others, but there does tend to be light at the other side. One of the most anticipated set to be released, which is a collection of films previously released is Viva Pedro - Pedro Almodovar Classics Collection (Talk to Her/ Bad Education/ All about My Mother/ Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown/ Live Flesh/ Flower of My Secret / Matador / Law of Desire) Accordingly, the Bad Education is the NC-17 version, while it also appears not every special feature that was available on the single disc releases are repeated here. Second to that is another re-release of The Silence of the Lambs (Collector's Edition). This edition includes over many extras that do not appear on the Criterion or previous Special Edition. There are 4 documentaries, 22 deleted scenes, and you can hear a phone call by Anthony Hopkins (whooppeee!). In addition, there is also a boxed set featuring Silence of the Lambs with Hannibal titled: The Hannibal Lecter Collection (Manhunter / The Silence of the Lambs / Hannibal) A title that has been in and out of print from Anchor Bay is Maniac. This version is being released by Blue Underground. Previously released in one of the Limited Edition Tins (only 5,000 produced!) and single editions, this new edition will have loads of extras including commentary, radio interviews, trailers, TV and Radio spots. In the world of documentaries, one of the hottest DVD's featured well known mythologist Joseph Campbell. His lecture series Joseph Campbell - Mythos has sold as high as $250.00 for some copies. The other title, a biographical account, The Hero's Journey was also getting up to $100.00 or more. These titles were released by Well-Spring. A new edition of Joseph Campbell - The Hero's Journey is set for release by Acacia. Mythos remains out of print. I also reccomend his Joseph Campbell - Sukhavati (also previously released from Mystic Fire Video) and Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth, both are excellent documentaries. Lastly is the psychological thriller originally released by Platinum Disc comes Apartment Zero. This new edition is the original theatrical edition. Neither identifies any special features on the disc. On the front line of OOP titles, there is dispute about whether the rare title The 1,000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse is back in print or not. According to our forum member thedvdmuseum, they were originally pulled because the original edition has a 15-second interuption of a Soccer Game! Yeah, believe it or not. A newer edition has on the security tape the word "corrected". This does not mean, however, that it is back in print, only that two editions currently exist. The double feature Testament Of Dr. Mabuse/ The Crimes Of Dr. Mabuse is also out print, both from Image Entertainment. Two popular Gothic titles Vampire Hunter Dand its sequel Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust are going out of print. Because of its cult status, might be good pick ups. Stephen Spielberg's directorial debut Duel (Collector's Edition) seems to be coming up out of print on Amazon. When this was originally released, it had a short recall, but evidently has come back in print since, perhaps due to technical issues. The title is readily available by third party sellers despite no longer selling directly by Amazon. A word of caution to collector's who shop on Amazon. Because Amazon allows users to create new product pages, many times there are double and triple headings for DVD's that have had only one release. Many of these items, if you read carefully, are Region 2 DVDs or otherwise import editions. While I am not against them and if you have a multi-region player, its great to get some Region 0-9 DVDs. But what I do notice is that some sellers take advantage of out of print titles and mark-up an otherwise in-print Region 2 DVD. If other-region DVDs interest you, I reccomend xploitedcinema.com, diabolikdvd.com, or hkflix.com to get those titles as they are at retail or less. They deal, more or less, in cultish titles, but for the most part in imported DVDs and everything is authentic.
