Double Disc Smokin' Gun
It has been about 2 weeks since United 93 has crash landed into video stores. The 2-disc version specifically has virtually left no traces on the shelves as collectors have bought them up quickly without any restocking from the stores. The result? Prices that have soared as fast as a runway take-off. Initially prices for the United 93 2-disc Limited Edition more than doubled in price, reaching almost the 100 dollar mark on eBay. That was about 10 days ago. Currently copies have cropped up through various online sources where depletion has not yet happened, and so what little is left out there collectors are tracking for. Some reports of lingering copies hanging out at some FYE's. The NBC Universal Store had some, but currently they are stating it is available. Prices have dropped considerably to the 40-50 dollar range on eBay. There is no word about how many were made or how limited they are. There is no number to determine and no word about how many were made. What is strange, however, as darkblume in our forum noted, that Amazon sold out in less than a week, and even now they appeared to have removed their listing from the search engine for a few days, but it appears back up. Weird stuff!
In other news, some recent reportings of OOP DVDs that you may want to watch for. Many of the MGM Midnite Movies have gone out of print, Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine; The Angry Red Planet; The Beast Within; Donovan's Brain; Invaders From Mars; The Island of Dr. Moreau; The Man from Planet X; Mars Needs Women; Planet of Vampires; Reptilicus; X- Man with the X-Ray Eyes.
From Anchor Bay are these three titles : The Giallo Collection, Running Time and Thou Shalt Not Kill..Except.
With the death of Steve Irwin comes the rise in price of his OOP DVD title, The Crocodile Hunter.
Re-Animator
Careful
Sexual Magic
I wanted to end this with a quick wrap up of some of the more popular 2-Disc collections that have come and gone out of print with a focus on Studio releases. (in case you missed some of the earlier blogs).
Jarhead continues to be one of the more popular double disc sets.
Munich has less interest than some of the other ones, but is probably harder to find.
Batman Begins became one of the first sets that fired the collecting market.
Cinderella Man has been out for a while but struggles to gain interest amongst collectors.
Fantastic Four as a film was not well received keeping these prices below the threshold.
Ray was too expensive at the retail level to gain enough momentum to be valuable. Seems to have collapsed instead.
There are plenty to list here that will remain unamed as they are still available. Two disc sets are not always going to be valuable nor are they limited, nor will they immediately go out of print. Oh wait, there was one more. I think this was a 2-disc set, but it came with a transluscent plastic slipcover:
Gandhi
If this title stays out of print for a long period, expect this to gain collector momentum. Thanks for reading, any comments can be made here or feel free to post them in the forum.
