Great OOP Titles at affordable prices
It is a well known fact that never does a title that is out of print suddenly becomes expensive. There are many titles that are very cheap and affordable that are great titles to pick up: for either collectible or simply to watch (imagine that!). With the prices of gas continuing to rise (here in San Diego some places has eclipsed the 5 dollar mark!), prices of food also seemingly more expensive that it may cut into peoples budgets to buy some of the more pricier titles. So here is a list from Anchor Bay that are not only great prices, but possibly great titles to invest in, but also some great movies. Although there are lots of great used prices out there, I decided it would help slim the list down by focusing on new and sealed copies.
- Antichrist - as schlock horror from the mid-'70's is a great slice of low budget Italian rip of the popular Exorcist. Needless to say, this one is still a classic in its own right that give fans what they want. Prices are in the basement starting at a cool buck seventy-five!
- The Beast With a Gun - Yes, this title has been re-released by Blue Underground. Although the same artwork appears on the re-release, they have renamed this as Mad Dog Killer. So you have two of the same movie with different titles. Helmut Berger stars as the lead in this Sergio Grieco film of the Italian crime genre. Prices start under $5.00.
- A Blade in the Dark - This is the kind of film that became synonomous with Anchor Bay at one time before losing way to the Starz Media brand of horror. Like most of their classic Euro-Horror films, Blue Underground has pretty much taken their entire inventory of great films. This one from Mario Bava's son, Lamberto. Prices are around the 10 dollar mark for a new copy. Amazon, as of this writing, has 2 in stock, but at the uncessary price of $26.99 (with an MSRP of 29.99? I dont think Anchor Bay ever had a title that cost that much). Needless to say, Blue Underground's is a straight port and Anchor Bay's are now classic DVD's unto themselves, so for the price, its the better route. Or you can try the double feature with Macabre.
- Business is Business - From the Paul Verhoeven Collection that was discontinued a few years back. While Soldier of Orange remains one of the more travelled title from the collection, here is one that has yet to take a step forward. Prices near basement at around $3.00 for a new copy.
- Cartouche - What was once expensive has turned up enough copies to make them more affordable starting a few dollars below 10 at the moment. A great anf fun French film.
- The Church - Argento fans might be happy to pick this one up for their collection at the very reasonable price of around $2.50 for a new copy. The medieval horror film starring his daughter Asia serves to spice this Italian thriller up, oh, and yes, this has been re-released by Blue Underground, but, compare the prices!
- Curse of the Devil - Standard Spanish Euro-horror from Paul Naschy and crew that is both campy fun and grisly gore. Originally released from Anchor Bay, but then later released by BCI/Navarre under the Paul Naschy Collection. This title falls at the 99 cent price for a brand new copy!
- Danielle Steel's Family Album Part 1 and 2 - Everyone loves a good romantic story every now and then, and who knows better to lay it on thicker than Danielle Steel? While some of her titles are out of reach for some peoples pockets, there are still a handful that are within everyone's range. This one starring former Charlie's Angel Jacklyn Smith, and its directed by Jack Bender to boot! New prices start under $10 dollars.
- Danielle Steel's Full Circle - Another title from Mrs. Steel starring Teri Polo and Corbin Bernsen. Prices for this start right around the four-dollar mark.
- Danielle Steel's Mixed Blessings - Yet, another to the list with prices beginning around $12.00. But hey, for that price you get 2 hours of Scott Baio!
- Danielle Steel's No Greater Love - Don't you love these titles? Here new prices begin around $8.00.
- Danielle Steel's The Vanished - One more Steel title to complete the collection (all of these for about $40.00 bucks new). This title individually begins around $8.00.
- Death and the Cross - A film from cult director Alex Cox (Repo Man, Walker) brings this relatively unknown detective story. While the release is marred by some audio issues, and not to mention the film itself is a sort of hodge-podge of a TV movie converted into a feature length film, it is still a must for Cox fans alike. Reviewers generall y agree the film is not the strongest film by Cox, however, they do agree the short film that is a bonus feature on the disc is excellent.
- For Love of Ivy - Starring Sidney Poitier in this classic film of love from the African-American viewpoint. Yes, this title has been re-released by MGM, and it that version is cheaper; here you can get the Anchor Bay version with such a nicer looking cover art than the current release. The prices for this edition starts around $10.00.
- Frankenstein 90 - Relatively obscure horror film, but here is a well received French take on the classic Universal Frankenstein monster. Low low prices here beginning around $2.00.
- Grissom Gang - The classic Robert Aldrich film based on the book 'No Orchids for Miss Blandish'. A dark comedy at times and others a fiery gangster film, but a great film either way. Prices begin as low as $9.00.
- Hell is a City - A rare film from director Val Guest starring Stanley Baker and Joan Crawford in an early Hammer film from their Noir line of films. If you missed some for your Hammer Collection series, here is one that is dirt cheap starting at only $2.00!
- Iguana - For those that are onto grabbing some cult directors, here is one from Monte Hellman (Two-Lane Blacktop, Cockfighter). Starring Everett McGill (Twin Peaks) as a man who is part reptile and part pirate. If thats not enough, this is supposedly and very loosely based on a true story. Prices here are at the basement level of only two dollars for a new copy.
- Kiss Me Monster - One of the better received films from Jess Franco in this naughty girls detective story. Not as good as the other film, Two Undercover Angels, but worth owning if you liked the original. This title starts at $6.00 despite Blue Undergrounds release of the double feature having both films together.
- The Last Tattoo - A film depicted in the setting of the US Navy starring Desmond Kelly. Prices are at clearance costs of only $2.00!
- Macabre - Sure, another Blue Underground rehash, but for $3.00 for a sealed copy, how can you go wrong with Lamberto Bava?
- Mad Mission Boxed Set - While each of the titles are individually discontinued, the better buy is this boxed set with all 4 DVDs in one set. Starting at only $6.00 for a sealed set, you are in for a real treat. If you never heard of it, but like crazy action style comedy, you will totally enjoy this.
- Melvin and Howard - From the works of Jonathan Demme starring Jason Robarbs and Mary Steenburg. Although re-released from Universal, this version comes with audio commentary not available on the newer edition. Prices begin around $8.00.
- Mind Benders - A cult classic starring Dirk Bogarde (also released in the Dirk Bogarde Collection). Here is one of the titles at a very cheap price of only seven dollars.
- Mirror, Mirror Collection - This is the complete set with all 4 films from the Mirror, Mirror series. While the first remains a horror classic, each film slowly gets downgraded in quality, style and even horror. But as a collection, they are fun to watch, even if not terrible scary. The first and third were released separately, however, they are individually more expensive than this set as a whole. New prices start above $6.00.
- Mischief - Oh, the good old 80's T&A films. When the plot did not need to be too thick, but as long as some nudity was shown, everyone was more or less happy. Here is one where you get a decent story and some great nude scenes from the young Kelly Preston. Maybe one of the all time greatest nude scenes?? You decide. Prices are at $4.00, but I would not expect it stay low very long.
- Nightmare City - From Italian horror director Umberto Lenzi comes this great zombie flick. Again, re-released by Blue Underground, but here, you are getting a copy for a little more than $3.00. You do the math.
- Once Upon a Time in Italy: The Spaghetti Western Collection - I believe these titles have been individually re-released by Blue Underground. But, here you have the entire set for as low as $22.00!. Thats a hot price.
- Parasite - An early effort from Demi Moore in a horror film. Although no rave reviews, it stands alone as a nostalgic piece of both horror and Moore's coreer. This Anchor Bay release is as low as two dollars, and it looks like there is a cheaper version available from Cult Video.
- Prizzi's Honor - There are enough reviews for you to read to understand this movie as a modern piece of Hollywood classic cinema. Jack Nicholson, Katheleen Turner with John Huston at the helm, its pretty much a solid piece of filmmaking. For only $10.00 you get, well, the Anchor Bay version (this has been re-released, not surprisingly).
- Shalako - Not one of the more popular westerns of the genre, however, with Brigitte Bardot and Sean Connery in the lead, helmed by director Edward Dmytryk, one would expect a win/win situation. Well, reviewers feel differently. That does not take away from this being one of the lost classics that Anchor Bay is known for presenting. Here you can pick up a copy for under $6.00.
- Short Night of the Glass Dolls - Here is a classic giallo from director Alan Lado who serves up more atmosphere than gore. Re-released from Blue Underground in a straight port, you can get the original Anchor Bay version for less than five bucks.
- Silkwood - The classic Meryl Streep where she works in a plutonium factory with poor worker safety. Based on a true story, Streep was nominated for Best Actress, while director Mike Nichols was also nominated. Also stars Kurt Russell. While this film was re-released from MGM, you can pick up the Anchor Bay version for around $9.00.
- Steptoe & Son - Classic comedy western starring Wilford Brimley. Here is a double feature at basement prices of less than #3.00 for a new copy!
- Straw Dogs - Perhaps the Criterion is more than you want to spend (albeit the best available version), however, Anchor Bay remains top notch in their DVD presentation. This has also been released by MGM later, but this edition can be had for a cool $7.00.
- Stuntman Limited Edition - This was released back in 2001 along with many of the Anchor Bay Limited Editions. This film, unfamiliar to many, had one of the higher numbered sets available, tallying around 100,000 copies. This is a 2-disc set which features the movie and the making of (also available in a single disc). This seems like the better one to pick up at around $4.00.
- Theater of Death - Famed horror icon Christopher Lee stars in this little piece of murder mystery. Little known to many, however, remains in the canon of classic cult cinema in the eyes of Anchor Bay. Here, this bit of cinematic history can be yours for only $3.00.
- Toy Soldiers - A comedy action flick of hostages, rambo-style missions and kids in a jungle. Whats not to like? And to boot, its one of the only nude scenes by Teri Garber. Starting as low as three bucks!
- Two Undercover Angels - The firstof the mystery detective stories starring two hot chicks, Janine Reynaud and Rosanna Yanni. Directed by Jess Franco, this has been re-released by Blue Underground in a double feature. This single feature can be picked up for around $4.00.
- Unidentifiable Flying Screwball - One of the early releases from Anchor Bay under Disney. Although Disney has since re-released their own titles, many of the Anchor Bay titles still have respectable demand. This one is, however, still available at a cheaper cost than many of the older Anchor Bay/Disney titles, and cheaper than the Disney re-release. Prices are starting a little above six dollars.
- Walking the Edge - A crime story starring Robert Forester. Prices are at the bottom starting around $2.50 for a new copy.
So thats about all for the Anchor Bay titles. There are tons more that are in print that are being sold at cheap prices like these that are equally worthwhile. At another point in time, I will explore other companies that have some great prices for out of print titles. Thanks for your support!
